Happy Thanksgiving and Simple Blessings

She said she usually cried at least once each day not because she was sad, but because the world was so beautiful & life was so short. {story people}

9AM:
Thanksgiving this year is quite a bit different for us. We usually host at our house with my entire family and Grandpa J and Amanda come to OH to join us.  The morning usually starts with Justin getting the turkey prepped and in the oven while I begin the frantic cleaning and pick-up, making last minute side dishes and trying to get the kids interested in watching the Macy's Day parade (they always get bored).
This year, we're in New York. We are spending it with 99% of the family (we're missing the AZ Youngers).  We will cook the meal at the cabin and then take it to the hospice house so that we can spend the day with Jim. The list of what we are thankful for really takes new meaning. There is a sign over a doorway in the house that we are staying in that reads "Simple Blessings"....like the big, fat snow flakes that fell this morning before eventually turning into rain.

11PM:
The best blessing of the day was seeing Jim smile ear to ear, over something funny when several of us were talking.  I have not seen that smile in months.  I wish I could freeze it in time.  The day was wonderful - chaotic and fun.  The folks at the hospice house were wonderful.  Warm and accommodating of us people invading the space. They had everything set up and waiting.  We made SO much food we could have easily taken care of about 30 more people. The cousins had a ball together, everyone got to go in and spend time in Grandpa J's room.  He must be thoroughly exhausted after all the visiting yesterday and today.
I love the fleeting and unassuming moments - that smile, overhearing the conversation of 2 preschoolers and their take on life, the coziness of being inside now while the sleet/rain is pounding away outside. I love that even in a time of impending grief, that we can laugh, enjoy being together and have fun.
I'm happy that Mas got to show his grandpa his class ring that we picked up on Monday.  He had Jim's "Grandpa J" signature inscribed on the inside of the ring (from his last birthday card).

From my favorite poet:

Thanksgiving - by Ella Wheeler Wilcox (1896)

We walk on starry fields of white
   And do not see the daisies;
For blessings common in our sight
   We rarely offer praises.
We sigh for some supreme delight
To crown our lives with splendor,
And quite ignore our daily store
   Of pleasures sweet and tender.

Our cares are bold and push their way
   Upon our thought and feeling.
They hang about us all the day,
   Our time from pleasure stealing.
So unobtrusive many a joy
We pass by and forget it,
But worry strives to own our lives
And conquers if we let it.

There’s not a day in all the year
   But holds some hidden pleasure,
And looking back, joys oft appear
To brim the past’s wide measure.
But blessings are like friends I hold,
Who love and labor near us.
We ought to raise our notes of praise
While living hearts can hear us.

Full many a blessing wears the guise
   Of worry or of trouble.
Farseeing is the soul and wise
Who knows the mask is double.
But he who has the faith and strength
To thank his God for sorrow
Has found a joy without alloy
   To gladden every morrow.

We ought to make the moments notes
   Of happy, glad Thanksgiving;
The hours and days a silent phrase
   Of music we are living.
And so the theme should swell and grow
As weeks and months pass o’er us,
And rise sublime at this good time,
   A grand Thanksgiving chorus.

The simple blessings make me happy - and oh so very Thankful.

An Update or Two

I had my gallbladder yanked out yesterday.  FINALLY!  After years of having issues off and on, and then it getting worse and worse, I finally went to see the surgeon (he's pretty much become our "go-to" surgeon since doing Margie's 3 surgeries) in June, and his recommendation was "yank it - it's obviously making you miserable and you have a family history of bad gallbladders."  So when he took it out he said it was very inflamed and scarred from extended inflammation and spitting out gall stones. So I guess it is a good thing that I went ahead and had it taken out.  He assures me that I will feel like a champ now :)
The worst part of it is the CO2 gas that they pump you with so that they can see easily inside at all your organs.  Wow, that leftover air is quite painful when it settles under ribs and in shoulders and collar bones.  Made it impossible to lay down last night, and the little bit of sleep that I got was done sitting up on the coach.  Hopefully that will go away soon!

Jim (Grandpa J) was moved into a hospice facility this week.  It's tough to know he's not in his cabin with a view of the pastures and lake, but it's good to know that he's getting the needed 24/7 care and it lifts a huge weight off of Emily. We'll spend Thanksgiving in NY this year - a first for us all to be together on Thanksgiving :)

Silas made my day this week when he enthusiastically hugged me one morning and said "I love you more than a poisonous snake!!" - really the only thing better would have been if he said he loves me more than his beloved "junk food"!

We've been in the thick of Parent/Teacher conferences.  All of the kids are doing very well in school, and Ella and Silas definitely have their teachers fooled again.  "Really??  (insert Ella/Silas) punches, kicks, throttles, (his/her) (sister/brother)?  I never would have guessed based on how good and cooperative he/she is in class!"  That is when I whip out the Flip cam and show the teacher just how they behave at home!

Bittersweet

{Bit-ter-sweet} Producing or expressing a mixture of pain and pleasure.

We've spent these last 3 days in New York, visiting Jim (Grandpa J), sitting with him, talking, trying to keep him comfortable, planning the logistics for the things we wish we didn't have to plan, and trying to make the best and most of this time because we are all together so rarely.
It's very difficult to think that this might be the last time we are here to visit him. But it's almost more difficult to think that he'll be in this state much longer - unable to move and get around as he's used to doing. The immobility is driving him nuts. He's antsy.  He's never been one to just sit...unless it's with a good book.

My stomach is in knots thinking that we'll say goodbye this afternoon.  And a long drive home with not much to distract the mind (except for fighting kids).

I look at this picture and I think of the lyrics to the Pearl Jam song Just Breathe:
Yes, I understand that every life must end,
As we sit alone, I know someday we must go,
Oh I'm a lucky man, to count on both hands
the ones I love,
Some folks just have one,
others, they've got none...

By Pearl Jam's standards...he's a lucky man and then some...

Happy Birthday!!

When we are...
At age 4: Mom knows everything!
Age 8: Mom knows a lot!
Age 12: Mom doesn’t really know everything.
Age 14: Mom doesn’t know anything.
At age 16: Mom doesn’t exist.
Age 18: She’s old fashioned.
Age 25: Maybe Mom does know about this!
Age 35: Before we decide, let’s ask Mom.
At 45: I wonder what Mom thinks about this?
At age 75:  I wish I could ask my Mom about this...

Happy 75th Birthday Mom
(who DOES know everything!)
We love you!

Ha Ha, Funny Man...

Justin lost his wedding band.  Probably at the commercial job he did at the end of last week.  I asked him tonight when we should break down and buy him a new one....
"after I break up with my girlfriend" he says.

He's lucky I am not a violent person. Wait, I am a violent person...he's lucky I'm too tired to raise my arms to throw something at him!

My Case for Being a Hoarder

Ella had a 3rd party to go to this weekend, requiring a costume again. She had been a Mummy twice already and we were both tired of getting her in and out of that costume! She had gotten her face painted the day before and wanted to keep that on so we thought she could go as a cat/kitten. I vaguely remembered having a costume with cat ears and a tail in the basement...from when she was a toddler.

I dug through the Halloween costume tote and sure enough, there it was! I pulled the tail off of the costume that would barely fit a 2 year old, pinned it onto her leggings and then put the ears on. She was happy and it was easy (making me happy!).
We also dug the Bat Mobile out of the basement this past weekend. Of course, after 12 years of storage, the battery was dead - so Justin and Si went to Batteries Plus, grabbed a new one and off Si went.
Now I just have to find the mask for Silas to wear!
