Jinx...

So, I totally jinxed poor Silas a couple weeks ago when talking with Yasmine. We were chatting about injuries and how Mason had broken his arm and Ella had gotten stitches.  But then I said "I've never had to take Silas to the ER...knock on wood."

Sure as heck, less than 24 hours later, there we were - Children's Hospital.
Poor kid was shooting baskets in the hoop out back, dunking like he's done 100 times and slipped, fell back and landed the wrong way on his arm.
I was working in my office, but heard his crying.  A LOT of crying that wasn't followed by "Ella did (blank)" or "Ella called me a (blank)."  I knew something was pretty hurt.

When I got upstairs I saw he was already laying on the couch, holding his arm and looked to be in a lot of pain. Huge grimace face and teethed clinched.  Not moving the arm and it looked swollen to me.
So...after asking our neighbor doc in our old house and then calling Jodi...to Children's we headed.
It wasn't obvious to me at the time, but what I thought was swelling was actually the bone being all out of whack.

 He had to put a mask on because he had a little allergy cough...

This was post-knock-you-out medicine to get the arm set.  He remembers nothing within seconds of getting the medicine.  He was pretty out of it after for awhile.  He told Ella that she had 4 eyebrows.

After he started coming out of it, he was a little scared because his eyes were all blurry and he couldn't remember what had happened and how the cast got on.  Ella was a really great big sister and was so sweet, talking to him and telling him about it and not to worry.  She was trying to distract him with funny stuff. He was so brave and such a trooper with the doctors and nurses.  Didn't shed a tear or flinch at all with all the poking and prodding.  He was a very brave boy!

He had a rough evening - was tired and out of it but by the next day, he was getting back in the swing of things.

Popsicles definitely made it feel better!

And 3 days later, he was ready for a little fun!  We went to Sarah's graduation party and Si was able to swim with the old XeroSock thing that we had when Mason broke HIS arm.  It is a total pain in the butt but worth it so that he could swim and have some fun.

Now, we go back tomorrow and hope that they can put a 1/2 cast that is waterproof on it in the next 1-2 weeks. Before all the cousins get here for our July party!

August Insanity...Hocking pics...arm update

August is shaping up to be an insanely busy month for us. We started it off with our great Hocking Hills trip, and then went to Zoombezi Bay on Monday (that was a lot of fun - but won't have any pictures to show until the waterproof camera gets "developed" - THAT is a term I haven't used for photography for awhile!).

This week Justin and I have been trying to get lots of work done so we are all caught up before we leave for the beach (Nags Head/Outer Banks, NC) on Friday . We are aiming to have the kids and van all packed up to leave by 4am Friday morning - wish us luck!

Justin went and picked up our 3500 pounds of hardwood flooring for our entire first floor last night (thanks Greg for your help!) and now it's all sitting in our front room "acclimating" until we get home from vacation. I am totally dreading the entire installation process - I'm not sure how we'll manage to rip up all the carpeting and linoleum, and then get all the hardwood down without going bonkers. I hate to have the house all a mess while it's getting installed but I know that it will be amazing once it's done. We got a beautiful teak that we could not take our eyes off of while we were at the flooring store.

Here is my mess of a front room right now with all the wood...ugh...it's stacked 3 or 4 deep...

We'd better come home from the beach rested, because the day that we get back, we've got 4 birthday parties to go to, the next day a Clippers Game and then Ella starts soccer, school starts that Tuesday (kindergarten and 8th grade!) and, and, AND then we end August with my 20 year class reunion! And through all that, my house is going to be a MESS! I can't seem to get over that...

AND, last but not least, Mason got his cast off today - just in time for the beach trip! It's a little stiff and sore right now but will hopefully be back to normal within a week or so. Do I dare let him ride the RipStick again??

Arm update

We went to the arm doctor today - the short cast is on! It is waterproof so swimming and showers are back on the agenda. There is a chance that the cast will come off in two weeks - which would be great since we will be taking our beach trip right after his next appointment. Mason is so excited to be able to bend his elbow again and to shower instead of taking a bath with his arm wrapped in duct tape and garbage bags!

Other appointment updates:
Mason's 13 year check up went fine - he's 55th percentile in weight, 70ish% in height. He had 2 shots which didn't make him very happy.

My dentist and ortho appointments also went just fine - we are getting very, very close to having these torture mechanisms taken off -a few more weeks.
We are shelling out a lot of $$ for healthcare this year!

Just because he's 13...

doesn't mean he's any more coordinated! Mason wiped out on his RipStick this evening, and he and I spent a few hours down at Children's ER - missing out on his birthday dinner (bbq ribs) and ice cream cake.

He's got a broken bone in the forearm area (the radius I now know) and is in a full arm cast. He'll have a cast for 6-8 weeks. He got really razzed by the ER nurses and docs about being there on his birthday. Thanks to Dr. Bull and Nurse Jodi, our neighborhood medical team. I seriously don't think I would have taken him for the x-ray if they hadn't strongly suggested that I should get it checked out...though he was in quite a bit of pain.

He felt good when we got home so we ate leftovers and then he opened one of his presents...cake was postponed until tomorrow!



I knew he'd figure out a way to get out of mowing the lawn this summer!!
