Boogies, Bugs and Bribery

This little story is a "guess you had to be there" one - but for my own rememberer (as Ella calls it) I need to jot it down. We were hanging with neighbors last night and Si was downstairs with the boys. I hear him yelling for me as he comes up the steps. I open the basement door to him with his finger pointed in the air - yelling "I got a boogie!!" -
"ewwww" I say, "where did you get that??!"
"my nose!" he tells me - DUH!

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Silas is obsessed with fruit snacks. He wants them breakfast, lunch and dinner. So I use his addiction to get me some toddler lovin'. Today when he asked I said "give me a kiss" - he puckered up and I got my kiss. I said "give me a hug" - he hugged tight as can be and said "I squish you like a bug!" - he will definitely know how to woo the girls!

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

So the other day when I posted the picture of Ella sleeping in our bed, I failed to tell the long version of the story. She had gone upstairs to pout because she had gotten in trouble. She got into trouble because when the ice cream man came driving through the neighborhood, I told her NO because it was too close to dinner. Well, about 10 minutes later, she comes walking in the front door with ice cream in her hand.
#1 - she's not supposed to be out front by herself (she had been out back playing with Si and the neighbors)
#2 - I had just told her NO to ice cream
#3 - Ice cream truck guys are as scary as the fair carnies (sorry if I have any ice cream truck drivers/carnies following the blog- don't mean to offend) and so it totally freaked me out that she had gotten ice cream alone from him.
So she was pouting because she was in trouble and then fell asleep in our bed. I'm feeling a little bit like it was my fault - I had bribed her with a dollar on Friday so that she would wear the outfit that I wanted her to wear to school...and that $1 is what she bought the ice cream with...
oh what a tangled web we weave....but doesn't she look cute?

Freaky Friday

Okay, cheesy title ;)

We've got some pictures - and artwork to show off...

This is Ella's self portrait for the wall at school. They were instructed to make the picture look like them. She picked the paper for the shirt and skirt out of my scrapbooking paper and then we cut hair and glued on the flower buttons and she colored her boots and jewelry.

This is Mason's 8th grade picture - quite handsome I must say

This is Silas' first masterpiece - he told me he made a cat...After looking at it, I thought that Aunt Margie had made it. Given my VERY limited artistic ability, I was highly impressed that a 2 year old could draw a cat that resembled a cat.

Tonight I panicked for a minute when we couldn't find Ella outside where she had been a few minutes earlier. After yelling inside and out, I went into my room and found her sound asleep in our bed with her snuggle bunny.

Siley J. - before a haircut and after - my little gap-tooth monster!

We are having fun with Uncle Shawn in town from Rhode Island. He and Justin have been golfing the last 2 mornings. The kids have also been having fun getting him to play outside with them. Tonight he pushed them on the swings and did under dogs - and then chased them around the house while they screamed bloody murder. I've yet to check for scratches on the hardwood floors.

FYI - I was looking on a photo blog and found this:
Simplify Your Life: Send Photos to Different Sites at the Same Time
where you can upload your web photos to different sites at the same time (duh, as the title says). Pretty cool. In the process, I upgraded to Picasa 3 which has more features and is still easy to use.

Bye Bye Summer...

I am definitely feeling Autumn in the Air.
What awesome sleeping weather!
I feel like we had a very good summer - we got to go to the Yankees game in NYC (actually that was in the Spring but still, I'm counting it!), we swam a ton this summer, planted our garden, caught lightening bugs, had a visit from mam-moo and Trent, Aunt Amanda and Grandpa, rode bikes, did sidewalk chalk, went to the zoo, went to the new Zoombezi Bay...

Looks like we also climbed trees, ate ice cream, slid down slides and broke an arm

Planted flowers, picked flowers, sat in our blue chairs on the porch and read Summer Legs over and over, grew a sunflower and strawberries, and saw some very pretty sunsets.

And swam and swan - A LOT!

What I enjoyed the most this summer was our beach trip - a wonderful, fun, relaxing vacation that was well documented with hundreds of photos!!!

Dispatch Article - B-Team

The B-Team had a wonderful article in today's Dispatch - (have tissues ready when you read it). I have to say that I have learned a lot from them in the 14 years that I have known Doug and Sheri - especially about parenting...that muddy, sticky kids are not BAD! but fun :)
About love, loyalty, faith and hard work - if you put Doug and Justin together they can build, make, create, repair or jimmy ANYTHING!

In this terrible situation with Doug's cancer - I am still learning lessons from the B-Team. Lessons I wish weren't necessary, lessons I am not really ready to learn about life and death - I'm still praying for the miracle of healing - I just can't bear the thought of anything else for them.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Sheri Barlay signs a school paper for Rebecca, 10, as husband Doug, who has incurable lung cancer, watches 2-year-old Katharine bound across the room. View all photos

COURTESY OF ST. CATHARINE CHURCH

Volunteers from St. Catharine's Church and School gather at the Barlay house to rehab it for Doug's remaining days.

Doug Barlay decided his remaining days were best spent back in Columbus, in the fixer-upper he and his family loved but had to leave when he took work in Kentucky.

What happened next is a story about love and compassion and how one church put its faith into action.

Doug Barlay's remaining time would likely be marked in months, said the notice in the St. Catharine Church bulletin.

Incurable cancer was bringing Doug, a lifelong parishioner, and his family back to Columbus from Kentucky, where he'd moved for a good job, to make a better life for Sheri and their four children.

The bulletin told parishioners that the Barlays planned to move back into the house they had left behind and hadn't been able to sell.

The problem was that the house was in no shape for the family. It lacked insulation and had terrible windows.

"We are trying to arrange to get as much stuff done as possible to give them some peace of mind in this stressful time," it said. "This is something that we don't want a dying man to have to worry about."

In Kentucky this past year, the Barlays held tightly to one another.

Sheri had stayed behind for a while to try to sell the house and to let the older girls -- Victoria, now 13; and Rebecca, 10 -- finish the school year at St. Catharine School.

She missed her husband and was ready for her family to share a home again when she and their four children -- Koen, 4, and Katharine, 2, are the others -- traveled in July last year to join Doug in Bowling Green, Ky.

Doug had developed a terrible cough that wouldn't relent.

In late October, a doctor told him it was lung cancer that already had spread. It was both inoperable and terminal.

He continued working full time through six rounds of chemotherapy. His job fitting amputees with artificial limbs and helping them regain mobility offered a respite from thoughts of his own illness.

The Barlays took a trip to Lake Cumberland in Kentucky with their extended families. They renewed their vows and traveled to Myrtle Beach, S.C., where Doug spent time alone with each of his children.

One day this summer, Doug called his wife to his office.

The pain was gaining intensity; his ability to work was waning, he told her.

"I think I'm ready," Sheri remembers her husband telling her as they both wept.

"It's time to go home now."

Doug's remaining days, he'd decided, would be best spent with those he loves. He'd thought ahead, to the life Sheri would have without him, and wanted her to be close to family and friends.

They would return to the fixer-upper they'd loved and left behind. They made a list of projects to tackle as money, time and energy allowed.

And so began the work of the people of St. Catharine and others who love the Barlays, and some people who'd never met them but felt drawn to the house at 161 S. Harding Rd. on the East Side.

What started with plans to paint a couple of rooms, clean the house and stock the kitchen blossomed.

First, some church people got to talking, then they connected with some friends, then the Knights of Columbus got involved and the whole thing just took off, said Steve Zehala, who oversaw the project.

They raised money -- $25,000, more than they ever imagined -- and they found companies willing to donate goods and labor.

Volunteers worked 16-hour days for 10 days straight, bumping into one another when the ranks climbed into the dozens. Some took vacation days to help. Those who couldn't manage physical labor cooked for the workers.

The house buzzed. Workers put a new roof on an older addition that would house a first-floor bedroom for the couple. The cancer in Doug's right lung has spread to his sacrum, the large triangular bone at the base of the spine, and to his upper back, making stair-climbing painful.

The workers ripped out and replaced decades-old carpet. They installed ceiling fans and painted the 55-year-old house the Barlays had bought in 2003.

They rehabbed an upstairs bathroom, transforming it into something sure to wow the older girls. They put in a double sink atop a cherry vanity. A new tile floor replaced deteriorating linoleum over a failing subfloor.

They insulated the whole house. They landscaped.

They stocked the refrigerator, the freezer and the cupboards. They bought diapers for the baby.

They made plans for new windows.

Doug is a generous man, with his time, kindness and concern, said longtime friend Pete Hamer.

This project was a chance to give back.

"There was a lot of energy, a lot of fun. It just kept on going and going and going," said Hamer, who became friends with the Barlays through his wife, Mimi.

"There was a lot of thought about, 'When the worst happens, how is Sheri going to afford to live?' "

They found something to do with their helplessness, something tangible to accompany their prayers.

"The response was absolutely overwhelming," said Zehala's wife, Amy. "It was like living in Mayberry."

They found grace amid darkness.

"If there is a legacy to be left by Doug, other than his family, I think there could be no better legacy than to have his community come together in such a tremendous way," said his lifelong friend, Rick Ochs.

"There is love in the world. There is concern for our fellow people."

Before moving day, Doug and Sheri knew they had to share the prognosis with the older girls. Victoria and Rebecca had known for months that their father had lung cancer, but they didn't know it was incurable.

"I knew that would be the last day of their innocence," Sheri said.

They nestled into their father's arms as he told them.

Victoria, Sheri remembers, asked who would walk her down the aisle.

Until now, the Barlays could pick and choose whom to tell and when to talk about the cancer, Sheri said. In Kentucky, she could go to her job at Macy's without everyone knowing that her husband was dying.

"We could be in denial. Coming home, everyone would know."

Aug. 18 dawned in Bowling Green to meet a family ready for the journey home.

This was the day they'd be welcomed into the comfort of friends and family but also the day they'd be surrounded by those who knew what the future held.

As the Barlays approached their home, Sheri fielded calls designed to gauge their whereabouts without tipping her off.

Meanwhile, S. Harding Road was home to a party. People swarmed the lawn and the driveway.

Dusk fell, and the Barlays arrived to hugs and tears.

The Rev. Michael Lumpe stood on the lawn and led a prayer.

Then he raised his hand heavenward to bless the house.

"May the blessing remain all the time on this place, and may the angels watch over and protect all who dwell here."

Doug sometimes finds himself fearful of the world in which his children will live without him.

When he came home that day, exhausted from the trip and in pain, he was overwhelmed.

And he was reassured that his beloved wife and children will not be left adrift.

After she returned to the embrace of a community and to a home that was barely recognizable, Sheri tried to describe how she felt.

"My chest had that really crazy 'full' feeling," she wrote on the blog she started before the move to Kentucky.

" Full like on your wedding day when you are just filled with promise, hope, joy, peace those same feelings you feel a couple weeks after you bring a baby home."

She's still struggling to find a way to say thank you. She hopes one way of showing her gratitude is with a promise to raise children who are just as kindhearted as the people who came in her time of need.

At home recently, fearing for what the future will bring, Sheri rested a hand on her husband's now-slender thigh. He dabbed sweat, a remnant of a brutal series of radiation treatments to slow the cancer, from his forehead.

It was their 15th wedding anniversary.

Sheri and Doug remembered leading premarital retreats for engaged couples, when they'd tell them the stories of their courtship, of how hot she thought he was (and still is), of how beautiful she looked when he returned from the Navy.

Then they'd tell them that a marriage is not about the wedding day, that it's about a lifetime of peaks and valleys and what lies in between.

And it's not about the house in which you live, but about the home you keep.

99.999999999999999999

Percent of the way there!

Front room - check!

Kitchen - check!

check!

and re-check!
The only first floor areas not completed at this point are the bathroom and the front closet. The laundry room will get tiled. All our "real" 1st floor living space is done!

So now the "putting back together" begins. Baseboards, touching up the beat-up walls, moving and removing furniture (Sarah and DZ -we need you!), the purchasing of area rugs (anyone have a Crate and Barrel discount??)
Holy smack, they are beautiful floors!!

So enough with the gorgeous floors already...

Here's my baby-love - at Jen's last weekend. I tell you, this kid really loves his books - and really, really loves other kids' books. This is the stack that accumulated on his lap after about an hour or two of thorough perusing. I love that all our kids love to read.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

On another note
...me, Margie, Tara, Lisa, mom, dad, Sarah and my kiddies went to spend some time with our relatives on the east side of town (ones that we don't see very often). Someday, I will devote an entire hour of blogging to the history on this side of our family. The Mexican/Navajo/Spanish side of the family - that is where my kids get their complexion ;)

An interesting FYI - my dad's dad used to ride with Poncho Villa. I have no idea what that entailed, but I assume it was riding around on horses in Mexico...I'll need to do a little research on this!

This is a photo of dad's parents and one of his sisters (Jessie, I think).

It Wobbles - It Wiggles

It joggles - it jiggles - a tooth has fallen out!
Yep - Ella woke up this morning and her tooth fell out! That is the fastest tooth-falling-out time we've had around here. Hopefully the tooth fairy is prepared!
She was giddy this morning between that and also going back to school finally (ahhh-laaaay-luuuuu-YA!!!)

Silas was sporting the "Calvin Klein for toddlers" look this morning.

Justin took over the downstairs today with pounding, sawing, hammering, nailing, stapling...on the floors, etc...so...this is where I sat up shop today. It was pretty hard to take myself serious professionally - sitting at a midget princess desk while talking to clients all day!
God forbid they make their way to my blog!

This is just a pic of Mason eating chicken wings but it was funny when Silas saw Mason and asked him if he was wearing Grandpa's shirt :)
And speaking of Mas - he's measuring at almost 5'7" these days!

Oh Baby...

The end is in sight!!!

This - That - and the Other

A hodge podge of stuff - the first is that Ella has her very first loose tooth! Just like with kindergarten, she has waited for this day forever!! The minute that her new teeth would come in, she'd ask me when her tooth would be loose and fall out like her friends! My girl is definitely growing up.
Notice the wide eyes in most pictures? After every picture she asks "did I blink??"

On to Ike - we managed to escape any damage from the high winds, even though all around us were lots of roofs being blown off, trees down everywhere, etc. This morning I went down to the basement to get something and discovered huge amounts of water dripping from the ceiling all over Justin's desk area - where he just happened to have a big basket of pictures that I usually keep in the front room - soaked - totally soaked. Ella's baby calendar, school pictures of Mason and Ella, lots of vacation pictures. I took some out and started trying to dry them off but I don't know how much I'll be able to salvage. Really a bummer. I can't imagine if it were everything I owned like those that really got hit by Ike, Katrina, etc.
Mom/Dad and Margie/Tim are still without power so they brought food from their fridge and freezers over tonight. Luckily we have a big stand-up freezer in the basement to load the stuff in. I just got an email that the schools are closed again tomorrow too...ugh!!!

A Margie update - today was chemo number 7 of 12. After #6 they did the CT scans - all looks good. NED as they say (No Evidence of Disease) according to what they can see on the scans but because there could be itty bitty nasty cells still in there, chemo will continue as planned. Any and all continued prayers are requested and appreciated!

Last - today was the first day of no work for Justin - Friday was his last day. He plans to work hard on the floors over the next few days to get them done - DONE!! and then really hit the search hard (so in the meantime, I'm hitting it hard). He is exploring starting his own business as well - which could be very exciting and very scary too. You may see me rummaging through your trash cans at night if things don't go well over the next few months!

And very last, a couple pictures from last week - Justin caught one of Siley and I smooching. And then we have Ella looking like Marion the Librarian...

Frozen or On the Rocks?

Yes please...unfortunately, Justin had a bit of an accident today while putting down the floors. When he was cutting the wood, a piece shot out of the saw doing about 50 mph and tagged him in the you-know-what - luckily we're both pretty much on the same page as far as 3 kids being a good number for us.

He spent several hours after that incident with a baggie of ice down his pants -

But despite the incident, good progress was made today on the floors - the really tough stuff of getting in the pantry area and under the oven was completed. We did discover 2 decent sized scratches today too. Justin was complaining but I told him (as I mentioned before we got the real wood floors) - I refuse to baby the heck out of them and get upset when they get scratched - just like our stainless steel kitchen table - or a new car - scratch it and get it over with (no, I didn't scratch the floor on purpose!)

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Lots of weather excitement today as Ike cleared a path through Ohio. Trees were bending over, flower pots and lawn chairs were flying, roofs were puking up shingles...it was quite something. Pretty much everyone around town lost power - except for our neighborhood. I had to tell Ella it could be a "twister" so that she'd stay inside. She vegged on the couch and watched The Wizard of Oz :)

School has been canceled because of all the power outages-
Mason will be thrilled!

Bob Builder

Silas has been bugging the heck out of me for the last week to watch Bob (the) Builder - but I had taken the DVDs back to the library (and paid my extraordinary fine on them). Today at Target they had 2 BB DVDs for $5.50 each - bingo!

I brought them home and after Si's nap he saw them and asked to watch one. I put one in and then hugged him, saying "Mommy bought you Bob the Builder".
"Why?" he asked.
"Because I love you" I told him.
"I so happy" he said.
How cute is he??

The Next Mia Hamm!

Check out Ella's awesome defensive play!!
She is doing such a great job at soccer - quite the hustle and competitiveness.

New Friends

This week - something odd happened
- we have lived next door to our neighbors for over 3 years now. We see their kids out (they have 4) and I'm sure they see ours out - we say hi but that is about it. All of a sudden on Monday - they all started jibber jabbering over the fence. Ella and the little girl (Areej) started talking and then I looked out to see Si and the boy his age (Samii, I think) throwing the ball over the fence at each other. It was so cute and they were having so much fun.

Last night they started again and then asked if they could go over and play. I opened the gate with strict instructions for Si - NOT to go outside of the 2 backyards. They have had a ball the last few evenings - and it is a very nice distraction for them while dinner is cooking.

(Pardon the bad pictures - I was taking these through the kitchen window and tree branches!)

Tonight the kids went inside to play with them for awhile and are now in the backyard again playing....it's one of the small miracles (which includes Soap) while we try to regain our sanity and deal with stress!

All's Quiet on the Younger Front

I have been laying low on the blogging for the past week - one reason is that I am having a hard time finding time. My work is extremely busy and it's been crazy around here with the floors going in and the mass chaos of the house during that. As you can tell...it's going to well worth the installation mess!
We've done some temporary rearranging of the furniture so that we can get the front room prepped for destruction, but all in all, our family room is livable again!

The 2nd reason that I've been laying low is that Justin found out at the end of last week that he will be losing his job by the end of this month. It came as a complete shock and it took us a few days to come to grips with it and then start formulating a plan of action. We feel much better than we did over the weekend and are ready to get moving in the search.
You all will be hearing from me soon asking for any contacts or leads in the construction and building supply/materials industry!

Other news this week:

Ella and Si make silly faces! Yeah, what's new!?

And both had invisible boo-boos that they HAD to have Band-aids for!

I spent a frustrating amount of time yesterday looking for an overdue library DVD - once I found it (about 3 hours later) I then realized I had lost the case that I'd been carrying around all day and had to spend another 3 hours looking for it! Now that I have them properly married...it'll spend another 3 days in my car racking up fines!

Luckily, last week (before the bad news) I purchased the entire 4 season set of the 70's TV series Soap and so we are getting some laughs watching the episodes after the kids are in bed - this has been a nice stress reliever! Any Soap fans??

First Soccer Game

Ella had her first soccer game yesterday. She did a great job of hustling and even scored a goal! Coach Daddy was very proud of her and the girls. Their team name this year is The Butterflies.

Notice her new soccer cleats - pink and black :)

She looks like such a little tomboy here!

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Justin was up at 5:45 am and was out the door at 6:15 to go play golf - some much needed R&R for him. He's worked his rear off on the floor and has all the hallway and most of the dining area completed. The more that goes down, the more we love it! Today we will work on getting the family room put back together - it's like a great big romper room right now.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Last night when I tucked Ella into bed, she was so sweet. She had played hard all day with her friends after soccer, so she was exhausted. She wanted to sleep in our bed and we were too tired to put up a fight. As I tucked her in she said "I love to snuggle with you - that's why I like to read books with you and sleep in your bed" and then she kissed me on the nose.
I know why my kids have to be so rotten sometimes - if they were as sweet as they can be ALL the time, my heart would shatter in a million little pieces.

Serving Our Country

Last night our brother-in-law/Uncle was shipped out to Iraq. William is part of the Nellis AFB 99th Security Forces Squadron. (Uncle Will is married to Justin's sister / Auntie Em - our NV Younger-Bennetts.)

If you'd care to send a card, his address in Iraq is:

A1C William R. Bennett
US Air Force - 532 ESFS/QRF
APOAE 09315-9997

Please say a prayer for William's safety (and for Em's sanity) while he is in Iraq!
